Every shopkeeper knows the regulars are the ones who keep the lights on. Yet most billing setups treat every sale as a stranger. A loyalty points program fixes that — it gives customers a small, growing reason to come back to you instead of the shop next door, and it costs almost nothing to run.
Why Loyalty Beats Discounts
A flat discount is money gone the moment you give it. A loyalty point is a promise the customer can only redeem by returning. That second visit is where the value is — winning a new customer is several times more expensive than getting an existing one to buy again.
How a Points Program Works
- Earning — the customer earns points on each bill, usually a small number per ₹100 spent
- Value — each point is worth a fixed amount (say ₹1) when redeemed
- Redeeming — on a later visit, accumulated points come off the bill like money
- Minimum — a redeem floor (e.g. 50 points) stops tiny redemptions and keeps points feeling like a reward
A common, safe setting is 1 point per ₹100 with each point worth ₹1 — that is effectively a 1% reward, small enough to be sustainable but visible enough to matter. Do not exceed your gross margin; a reward that eats your profit is worse than none.
The One Thing You Must Do: Capture the Phone Number
Points are tied to a customer, and a customer is identified by their phone number. If your counter does not capture the phone at billing, there is no loyalty program — just an unused feature. Make entering the phone a habit; it also powers WhatsApp bills and payment reminders.
Running It From Your Billing Software
You do not need a separate loyalty app. Billux has points built into the till:
- Set your earn rate, point value and minimum redeem once in Settings
- Points are awarded automatically on every bill where the customer's phone is entered
- On a return visit, enter the phone — the customer's points appear, and a "Redeem" option converts them to money off the bill
It works the same on the retail, supermarket, pharmacy and salon counters, and the redemption is deducted cleanly from the customer's balance.
The Bottom Line
Loyalty points are the cheapest marketing a small shop has — no ads, no flyers, just a reason to come back. Turn it on, capture phone numbers, and watch your regulars grow.
