245 headings and product rows under 99 chapters. Where one code holds items at different rates, the row says Varies — check and the note explains what decides it.

How to find the right HSN code

  1. Start from your purchase bill. Your supplier's invoice already carries the HSN code; use the same one when you resell the item.
  2. Search by the plain product name above (for example “ghee”, “bedsheet”, “mobile”) or by the first digits of a code.
  3. Read the note. Packaged versus loose, price per piece and material often change the rate.
  4. Set the rate once in your billing software so every bill uses it — then check the tax with the GST calculator.

Split headings: where the code alone is not enough

Most mistakes happen where one four-digit heading holds items at different rates. Watch these when you set up your item list:

  • 0406 cheese vs paneer: paneer and chena are nil-rated, cheese is 5%.
  • 1905 bakery: plain bread, pizza bread, khakhra and roti are nil-rated; biscuits, cakes and pastries are 5%.
  • 2106 food preparations: namkeen and sweets are 5%, pan masala is 40%.
  • 2202 drinks: aerated and caffeinated drinks are 40%, plant-based milk drinks 5%.
  • Chapters 61, 62 and 64: clothing and footwear are 5% up to ₹2,500 a piece or pair and 18% above, so the same code can carry two rates on one bill.
  • Rice, atta and dal: generally nil when sold loose and 5% when pre-packaged and labelled.
  • 8703 and 8711 vehicles: small cars and bikes up to 350 cc are 18%, bigger ones 40%.

In each case the rate follows the product and the eight-digit tariff line, not the first four digits. When a row above says Varies — check, that is the reason.

SAC codes for services

Services use SAC codes starting with 99: restaurants 996331 (5% without input tax credit), salons and spas 99972x (5% without credit), repairs 9987 (18%), professional and IT services 9983 (18%), and hotel rooms 996311 (5% up to ₹7,500 a night, 18% above). Search “restaurant”, “salon” or “repair” above to see them.

HSN digits on your invoice

With turnover up to ₹5 crore, show at least 4 digits on B2B invoices; above ₹5 crore show 6 digits. Our GST invoice generator has an HSN column on every line, and the GSTIN checker confirms the buyer's GST number.

HSN codes — questions people ask

What is an HSN code?

HSN stands for Harmonised System of Nomenclature, a worldwide product-coding system. India uses it to classify goods for GST and customs. The first two digits are the chapter, four digits the heading, six the sub-heading and eight the tariff line. The GST rate of a product is fixed against its HSN code.

How many HSN digits must I show on a GST invoice?

Businesses with an aggregate turnover up to ₹5 crore in the previous year must show at least 4 digits of HSN on B2B tax invoices; on B2C invoices it is optional. Above ₹5 crore, 6 digits are required on every tax invoice. Services use the SAC code in the same way.

What is the difference between HSN and SAC codes?

HSN codes classify goods, while SAC (Services Accounting Codes) classify services. SAC codes start with 99 and are usually six digits, for example 996331 for restaurant services and 999721 for hairdressing. Both appear in the same column of a GST invoice and in the HSN summary of GSTR-1.

Where is the official HSN code list with GST rates?

The legal source is the set of GST rate notifications published by CBIC on cbic-gst.gov.in, mainly Notification 9/2025 and 10/2025-Central Tax (Rate) for goods since 22 September 2025. The GST portal also has an HSN and SAC search. This finder summarises those rates with a last-checked date.

What should I do when the rate says "varies — check"?

It means items under that code are taxed at different rates depending on packing, price, material or use, so the code alone cannot decide. Read the note under the row, find the exact eight-digit tariff line on your supplier invoice, and confirm with the notification or your CA before you bill.

What happens if I use the wrong HSN code?

A wrong HSN code can mean charging the wrong GST rate. If you charge less tax than due, you owe the difference with interest and may face a penalty; if you charge more, your customer pays extra. Wrong codes also make the HSN summary in GSTR-1 incorrect, which can trigger notices.

Are HSN codes the same as customs tariff codes?

Yes. GST uses the same eight-digit codes as the Customs Tariff Act (ITC-HS) for goods. So the HSN code printed on an import bill or a manufacturer invoice can usually be used on your sale invoice too, and the GST rate notifications refer to these chapters, headings and tariff lines.
